Scholarships!

As of February 17, 2012, the following scholarships have been awarded:

  •  twenty scholarships for 2012
  •  nine scholarships in 2011
  •  four scholarships in 2010
  •  two scholarships in 2009 

We are actively soliciting donations so that we can offer both full school year scholarships and "rainy season" scholarships in the future.  

Scholarships awarded February 2011

Nine scholarships for a "rainy season" course at Bridge Institute of Business Studies were awarded to the following individuals.  The course ran from March 1 - May 31, 2011.

Julio Francis Ludago - sponsored by two December 2010 Kili climbers

Julio is married with two children.  He was a porter for 3 years and an assistant guide for 2 years.  He has been a guide for 3 years.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 100 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted that he is actively learning French and Spanish languages.  Julio successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 65%. 

 

Pascal Gervas - sponsored by a January 2011 Kili climber 

Pascal has two children.  He was a porter for 5 years; he has been an assistant guide for 7 years.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 250 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I want this scholarship to improve my life and to support my family."  Unfortunately, Pascal was not able to complete the course.  At the mid-term, he had achieved an overall rating of 65%.

 

Venance Vicent Damas - sponsored by KGSF donors

Venance was a porter for 2 years and an assistant guide for 4 years.  He has been a guide for one year.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 140 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I want this scholarship because I want to increase my knowledge about administration studies, wildlife studies, tourism geography, and social studies."  Venance successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 66%. 

 

Joseph David Msaki - sponsored by Gane and Marshall

Joseph is married.  He was a porter for 4 years and an assistant guide for 3 years.  He has been a guide for one year.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 147 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I want this scholarship because I want to increase my knowledge and skills in the tourism industry.  I like being a guide because it allows me to make an income to support my family and it gives the opportunity to interact with people from around the world."  Joseph successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 65%.

 

Joshua Harold Mlay - sponsored by Exodus

Joshua was a porter for 2 years and an assistant guide for one year.  He has been a guide for 2 years.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 75 times.  In his scholarhsip application, he noted: "To me, education is an endless process.  By undergoing these studies, I will be able to take different challenges in the tourism industry and I will be a useful resource to my entire community.  I enjoy showing visitors Kilimanjaro and this is a massive chance to develop a variety of skills.  The whole learning process is an ongoing situation that adds interest to my work."  Joshua successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 74%.

 

Prosper J. Swai - sponsored by AhSante Tours

Prosper has been a porter for 4 years.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 50 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I will work hard to become a professional mountain guide."  Prosper received an overall rating of 46%.

 

Respick Prosper Mushi - sponsored by Discover Adventure

Respick has been a porter for 2 years.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 20 times.  He has completed primary and secondary education through Form Four.  In his scholarhsip application, he noted: " I want this scholarship because I want the improvement in my life nad good performance in my job."  Respick received an overall rating of 53%.

 

Amanyisye Justo - sponsored by KGSF Directors

Amanyisye was a porter for 6 months and he has been an assistant guide for one year.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 25 times while working for African Walking Company and 30 times while working in the mountain cleaning crew with the Kilimanjaro National Park.  In his scholarship application, he noted: I want this scholarship so I can improve my skills/knowledge in handling clients properly.  I value the chance to expand my knowledge and develop some skills in tour administration."  After learning of receiving the scholarship, he shared: "Since I was a boy, I have dreamed of being involved with airplanes.  How cool it would be to pilot the plane with tourists from their home country and then guide them to the summit of Kilimanjaro."  Amanyisye successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 62%.

 

Diglan Makombo Tesha - sponsored by KGSF Directors

Diglan is married with two children .  He was a porter for 3 years and he has been an assistant guide for more than one year.  He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 80 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I want this scholarship because I want to gain more knowledge and improve my skills as this is my career and I depend on it."  After learning of receiving the scholarship, he shared: "When not climbing I like to farm.  We have family farm land in Rombo which provides enough food for our extended family as long as the rains are enough."  Diglan successfully completed the course and received an overall rating of 76%.

 

Scholarship awarded November 2010 - sponsored by Action Challenge

We issued our 6th scholarship to Martin Stanslaus Mpuya for the 2010/2011 school year on 10/9/2010.  Martin will attend Moshi University College of Co-Operative and Business Studies.  He is attending the second year of a two-year course for Diploma in Co-Operative Management and Accounting.

 

Scholarships awarded January 2010

We issued our 3rd - 5th scholarships for a "rainy season" course at Inter-Continental Training College for the following individuals on 1/26/2010.  The course ran from March 1 - May 31, 2010.

Matthew Heavenlight Lyimo - sponsored by Ku-Ring-Gai Veterinary Hospital

Matthew is married with two children.  He began climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1998 as a porter.  He has been a Chief guide since 2004 and has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 120 times.  In his scholarship application, he noted: "I had always wanted to attend school, but due to lack of funds I could not.  I would be happy to get the scholarship in order to boost my career and to gain more experience and learn more skills that will help build my future."  Matthew completed the course and received an overall rating of 77%.

 

Makeke R. Sandy - sponsored by KGSF

Makeke is married with two children.  He began climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1994.  He has been a guide since 1999 and he has been to the summit more than 50 times.  In his application, he stated: "I would like this scholarship to get more knowledge about tourism and to be a better guide."  Makeke completed the course and recieved an overall rating of 68%.

 

Musa Shaabani Mbaga - sponsored by KGSF

Musa is married with two children.  He bagan climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2000.  He has been a guide since 2008 and has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro more than 100 times.  In his application, he stated: "The scholarship would help me to broaden the scope of my professional knowledge as a tour guide."  Musa completed the course and received an overall rating of 70%.

 

Scholarship awarded September 2009 - sponsored by KGSF

We issued our 2nd scholarship to Martin Stanslaus Mpuya for the 2009/2010 school year on 9/8/2009.  Martin attended Moshi University College of Co-Operative and Business Studies.  He completed the first year of a two-year course for Diploma in Co-Operative Management and Accounting.  He earned a 2.5 GPA for the first semester and a 3.3 GPA for the second semester.

As of 2009, Martin had climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro for seven years and he had climbed the mountain over 100 times.  He began working for Tusker Tours in 2003 and steadily sought training and increased responsibilities.  He became a licensed guide by the Kilimanjaro National Park in 2006.  Martin has a goal to become an accountant or finance manage for a tour compamy and to eventually to own his own tour company.

 

Scholarship awarded January 2009 - sponsored by KGSF

We issued our 1st scholarship to Humphrey Jumbe Nnko for an English course at Inter-Continental Training College during 2009.  He earned a "B" in English grammar and a "C" in English composition.
