Initiatives

In June 2009, KGSF issued a press release announcing plans to award two scholarships to licensed Mt. Kilimanjaro guides for the calendar year 2010.  The press release was sent out to 30 climbing companies operating in Tanzania.  We heard back from two companies.

In response to concerns by both companies, we worked with Inter-Continental Training College in Arusha, Tanzania to create a special course that could run through the raining season.  This course is applicable to guides and porters and will enable them to improve their future career prospects.  This course will run from March 1 through May 31, 2010.  It allows the scholarship recipients to continue working during the remainder of the year.  The course consists of four sections:  tour operations and administration, social anthropology and history, tourism geography, and wildlife knowledge.  We are awarding three scholarships for this special rainy season course.

We are actively soliciting donations so that we can offer both full school year scholarships and rainy season scholarships in the future.  We hope that we will be able to award a number of scholarships each year.  We need your help!  Please make a donation today!  If you make a donation, you are entitled to nominate a candidate for a scholarship – please see the Contribution Form.

Scholarship 2009

In April 2009, our first scholarship recipient (Humphrey Jumbe Nnko) completed his first term 2009 English course at the Inter-Continental Training College in Arusha.  He earned a “B” in English grammar and a “C” in English composition.

Scholarship 2010

We issued our second scholarship to Martin Stanslaus Mpuya for $1,500 for the 2009/2010 school year on 10/7/09. Martin will use the scholarship to attend Moshi University College of Co-Operative and Businesss Studies. Martin will be attending the first year of a two-year course leading to a Diploma in Co-Operative Management and Accounting.

Martin has been climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for seven years and he has climbed the mountain over 100 times. He began working for Tusker Tours in 2003 and steadily sought training and increased responsibilities. He became a licensed Guide by the Kilimanjaro National Park in 2006. Martin has a goal to become an accountant or finance manager for a tour company and to eventually to own his own tour company.
